This much-loved family property dates back to at least the 16th century, and possibly much further. In its more recent past, the house served as the village school.
Rental is available of a completely self-contained wing of the property, which has been restored in traditional style.
The house is set in its own extensive grounds, just outside the village, and has a large swimming pool with stunning views over the surrounding hills and valleys.
Guests have the use of all the grounds, including their own vine-covered terrace for eating out and sunbathing. The house has a private wood to the rear, with a path leading into the village.
San Mamiliano is the oldest inhabited village in Umbria. There are lovely views, wonderful walks and horse riding, tennis, canoeing and rafting all available nearby.
Best of all, it is a place where time has stood still, where people still lead their lives according to the seasons. You can pick wild asparagus from the hillsides in Spring, watch fireflies in Summer, roast chestnuts by the fire in Autumn, see olive oil being pressed in Winter and drink good local wines and eat home-cooked food all year round.
San Mamiliano is well off the tourist beaten track. It is an excellent base to explore all the main sites (Spoleto 20 mins; Assisi/Perugia/Todi/Orvieto 40 mins; Cascate delle Marmore, Europe’s highest waterfalls, 10 mins) and then retreat to peace and quiet at the end of the day.
The property’s owners, Mario and Clare, will be happy to point you in the direction of local hidden treasures, such as the 7th century frescoed Abbey, a short drive up the valley, and the abandoned hillside village of Umbriano, the perfect place for a picnic.
There are several very good country trattorias in the area, serving local specialities such as truffles, grilled trout and home-made pasta.
The wing has two double bedrooms and a sitting room, with a double sofa-bed , kitchen area and stone fireplace. It is furnished to a high standard and equipped with crockery and bed linen for up to 6 people.
San Mamiliano is too small to feature on most maps. The nearest bigger villages are Ferentillo and Montefranco. The house can be reached in 1.5 hours from Rome and 2.5 hours from Pisa, Ancona or Pesaro.
